The MLK 5K is tomorrow! As of right now, we still plan on hosting the run, with some minor changes. First, we have changed the course and will focus the run on Capitol & Illinois streets, both of which are major streets which we hope will get the best treatment from DPW. We will head out on 40th Street, turn north on to Capitol, turn right on to 52nd Street, then another right on to Illinois, before finishing back at the K Center. An updated map is below.
Also, as a safety precaution we have decided not to time runners, so that they can focus on being cautious rather than meeting a certain time. The route is a few tenths of a mile short of a 5K as well, so receiving a time might not be as interesting for runners, anyway.
Note also that the registration page is still active a few posts below this one for those trying to register.
Weather: Note that all participants will be able to gather out of the elements in the MLK Center until just prior to the race, but once out on the course be prepared for snowy conditions.
Parking: The MLK Center parking lot is available for parking on race morning and can be accessed from 40th St by coming off Meridian only. You will not be able to access 40th St from Illinois so plan accordingly. Overflow parking is available one block south off 39th at the North United Methodist Church.
Packet Pickup: We highly encourage participants to stop by the MLK Center on Friday between 5:00 – 6:30 pm to pick up your packet to avoid race morning congestion. Packet pickup will be open on race morning only from 8:00 to 9:15 am.
Race Logistics: There will be a short ceremony beginning at 9:15 am prior to the race in the MLK Center before participants head out to the start line on 40th St. Water, coffee, hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available in the MLK Center after the race and race results will be posted online later in the day.
We are looking forward to a great event on Saturday – see you there!
