INDIANAPOLIS –On Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, Westfield Boulevard is scheduled to close from Broadway Street to College Avenue for the construction of storm drains, curbs and sidewalks. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) expects Westfield Boulevard to remain closed for three to four weeks, during which time commuters will follow a marked detour route of Kessler East Drive to College Avenue.
The work along this section of Westfield Boulevard is part of the College Avenue and Westfield Boulevard Intersection Improvement Project. These improvements have been coordinated with and will complement the parking garage construction project already underway.
Looking ahead, commuters in this area also can expect the Guilford Avenue bridge over the Indianapolis Water Company Canal to be closed for maintenance 75 days beginning on or close to March 1. The bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic, but pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout the construction duration. The detour route during this closure will be East Westfield Boulevard to Westfield Boulevard to East 64th Street.
DPW’s work in this area is expected to be complete mid-summer, 2013.
“This work begins another phase of improvements for the entire Broad Ripple neighborhood that will benefit both residents and visitors to the area,” Department of Public Works Director Lori Miser said. “Together, these projects will make travel through this part of Indianapolis smoother and parking more accessible and convenient.”
This work on Westfield Boulevard and the Guilford Avenue bridge are a part of the City’s RebuildIndy program. Launched in 2010, RebuildIndy is Mayor Ballard’s initiative to improve city infrastructure by restoring deteriorating streets, sidewalks and bridges, addressing neighborhood drainage and flooding issues, and demolishing unsalvageable abandoned homes that pose a public safety threat.
